More Flare Please!

As we visit properties throughout Dallas and Fort Worth, we consistently come across trees that have been improperly planted. In the case shown below, the tree was planted too deep. As it grew, the root flare became buried, ultimately causing the roots to gridle. Girdling roots can negatively affect the canopy development and proper branch growth. The tree will then begin to decline or ultimately die.

It seemed, recently, that a very messy arborist was pruning cedar elms all over the Dallas area. I personally came across huge masses of leaves, branches and twigs on numerous properties after fielding some calls from concerned clients that a ghost pruner was getting at their trees. To my surprise, they were thinned at 20% and probably for air-light movement. What a nice job I thought to myself, although they could work a little neater. It could be from my crew, if only I wrote the scope of work for them.

What’s All the Stress About? Could Be Aphids!

This month, we’re noticing many new insect infestations on trees around the DFW area. Because many of our urban trees are stressed from heat, improper watering and lack of fertilization, they are more susceptible to pest problems. Aphids are one of those pests invading trees right now, as seen on the leaves of the post oak (in photo) that we recently inspected.
